Dr. John Hilinski San Diego Plastic Surgeon Interviews on Ethnic Rhinoplasty -2

Join us Dr John hilinski , certified specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Today, Dr. Hylinski will be here to discuss the importance of ethnic rhinoplasty and progress in the field of plastic surgery.

ALEX: Dr. Hilinski, some people think that patients who choose rhinoplasty just want to look their best. Can you dispel this notice for us and sometimes share a few thoughts that people might have when searching for rhinoplasty?

DR. HILINSKY: I would say that in a good majority of cases, patients with rhinoplasty do not want to create a nose that looks better. The real impulse underlying their desire to have cosmetic wear is simply to get rid of certain features of their nose that bother them. For example, patients with a large hump or a bulbous tip of the nose are not necessarily looking for a more beautiful nose. They really want to simply reduce the hump (or the defect in the relief) or make the tip less round so that these functions are not so obvious.

The real purpose of rhinoplasty is to redraw the nose in such a way that people look beyond it, without having to hang a particularly distracting feature on it and just looking at the eyes.

In other cases, patients with rhinoplasty seek to restore their nose to a condition that was previously exhausted. For example, (often times) noses are disturbed as a result of a traumatic injury or accident. The nose was shifted or shifted to one side or the other. In many cases, this is accompanied by troubles breathing through the nose. Thus, these patients seek to correct a traumatic injury by changing the nose to restore the old look. If there are problems with breathing through the nose, this dysfunction can be corrected at the same time.

ALEX: Dr. Hilinski, you recently gave a lecture on ethnic rhinoplasty at the UCSD Medical Center in San Diego, California. Are there problems or problems with current rhinoplasty standards for patients of different nationalities?

DR. HILINSKY: Yes, that was part of the message I was trying to spread to ethnic rhinoplasty. Unfortunately, there are still a large number of plastic surgeons who are trying to overly aggressively redraw the noses of ethnic rhinoplasty. This leads to the appearance of noses, which are far from ethnic specificity for these individuals. These patients end up with noses that look “western” or look more Caucasian than ethnic. The end result is a nose that has all the stigma from a surgical change.

This is not the view that ethnic patients are looking for. Rather, they seek to achieve a result that seems ethnically compatible with their surrounding features — a nose that looks as if they were born with it. I try to convey to other plastic surgeons the need to avoid it, if at all possible.

ALEX: Doctor, will you share with us some of the highlights of your lecture?

DR. HILINSKY: Of course. One thing that I really stressed to the audience of plastic surgeons in the community was how different the skin is when dealing with patients with ethnic rhinoplasty. Why does it matter? Because a thicker ethnic skin behaves inevitably than a thinner Caucasian skin. For example, if you are trying to create more definition of a tip in an ethnic nose that is rather rounded in appearance, you cannot rely on a standard surgical technique that you will use in a Caucasian nose. You need to make more final changes to the skeleton and cartilage structure in the ethnic nose in order to achieve the desired type of cosmetic changes. This is really important when performing an operation on ethnic rhinoplasty.

ALEX: Dr. Hilinski, do you feel it is important that surgeons keep abreast of industry standards?

DR. HILINSKY: I think it is very important to understand where the standard of the community is when it comes to achieving surgical results in the field of plastic surgery. In my opinion, you should always strive to achieve consistent surgical results that are much better than average. Therefore, understanding where the community standard lies is a prerequisite.

You must be careful that it is not easy for you to swing as a surgeon with the latest and greatest amount of technology. There are so many new technologies that are being introduced every year in the world of plastic surgery, all of which are designed to help us achieve better results. The reality is that almost all of these shortcomings are short. No matter how good the technology is, he still favors the technical skills of the plastic surgeon when it comes to achieving the best, consistent results - especially in the field of cosmetic nose changes.

ALEX: Finally, doctor, what are some important considerations that someone should do when choosing a plastic surgeon?

DR. HILIN: One of the most important considerations is board certification. If a person is looking for facial plastic surgery - including rhinoplasty, otoplasty, face lift, etc. - I would strongly recommend that you seek advice from the surgeon's office, certified by the American Council of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It is the only certifying organization that oversees plastic surgeons with a commitment to cosmetic facial surgery.

If you are looking for a restoration of the body - for example, breast augmentation, then find someone certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. When it comes to facial plastic surgery, you should really look for a surgeon whose practice is focused only on the face.

In fact, it is really difficult to be a so-called specialist in facial plastic surgery, when you do a breast augmentation one day, a tummy tuck next, then do a rhinoplasty at the end of the week. The division of time between these widely varying plastic surgery procedures should make patients think twice about who they prefer to perform their facial procedure.

In addition, patients should look at a healthy number of photographs from previous patients who received this surgeon. In many cases, patients will be asked to see examples of photographs, such as rhinoplasty. When a plastic surgeon says that they do not need to show or produce only competent examples, potential patients should be concerned. This is a red flag if they do not have a wide range of representative examples of rhinoplasty.

If a surgeon does this type of surgery on a regular basis, they will have many excellent results. This is true for any type of facial plastic surgery wherever you may consider cosmetic nose surgery or otoplasty.

ALEX: Thank you very much Dr. Hilinski for joining us today and sharing his knowledge and experience on this important issue.

DR. HILIN: My pleasure.
