Food for thought: train your mind -2

Depression is a disorder marked by sadness, low energy, disturbed concentration, and feelings of despondency. Some people think that depression is normal. Daily activities related to heterosexuals, and the conflict between family and career cause constant stress. However, depression and anxiety as a reaction to stress are not normal. They can be signs of illness that can worsen and lead to physical symptoms or inability to function.

Life has been much easier for the last two generations. Father worked; mother stayed home. This is no longer a model. Some now see families as “endangered species”. There are more single mothers than ever before. Stress and competition for well-paid jobs is increasing. Result: long hours of work, away from family. Children are brought up with limited supervision. Thus, we see more children with emotional problems arising from a lack of knowledge about who they are and what their role is in today's society. Similarly, adults suffer from loss of upbringing, which should provide family time.

Until recently, mental health has not been discussed openly. However, there is a growing awareness that the choice of therapy may be useful, even necessary, to cope with today's life. Psychiatric care is often considered for the whole family. Today, being healthy means not only having a healthy body, but also a healthy mind and spirit.

People exercise their bodies daily, but they neglect the "manifestation" of their feelings and emotions. Young people are taught to hide and deny emotions. Women are associated with seeking help in dealing with their depression, anxiety, or troubled relationships. The same fitness fanatic who trains every day, eats and has two physical states a year, will neglect the mind until a crisis is reached. Emotional problems do not just happen, but are cumulative, and can sometimes be avoided with the same “daily physical fitness” and “annual physical” approach that we use in caring for our bodies.

The Chinese say: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." Just as it is better to maintain a healthy heart than to recover from a heart attack, it’s easier to deal with emotional problems before the chaos of the crisis breaks. Think about “exercising your emotions,” and ask your mental health professional to call.
