Six functions of electronic medical records -2

Electronic medical records will be needed in the future. It is important to examine the functions of EMR and how it fits into the workflow of the office.

1. Patient Chart

Information about visiting patients is placed in templates or forms; to contain information such as vitality, complaints, medical records, systems review, physical exams, etc. Most EMI systems have lists of choices, drop-down boxes, handwriting recognition, or voice recognition to reach a patient chart.

2. Order of communication systems

This is often referred to as a computerized doctor's order (CPOE) record. This allows the electronic medical record system to transmit information using external systems such as laboratories, image processing centers, hospitals and pharmacies through the level 7 interfaces. This allows providers to send laboratory requests, visualization requests, prescriptions, send visiting costs and diagnostic codes to office / billing system.

3. Clinical decision support systems

The system includes alerts, reminders and recommendations that allow automatic clinical decision making with information in the database. It also helps doctors with coding and diagnostics. Many EMR systems provide doctors with a recommended CPT code based on the rules of assessment and management (EM). This allows doctors to pay payers at the highest possible rate for services performed.

4. Document / Image Management

For offices, it is important to manage the intense flow of paper entering their office. Offices are constantly filled with patient admission forms, referring to letters from doctors, laboratory reports and faxes. EMRs allow physicians to access these documents in an intuitive user interface. EMRs provide doctors with a way to manage imaging, such as x-rays, MRI and ultrasound.

5. Patient portal

Personal medical records allow patients to access their medical record from any computer with a secure Internet connection. These programs include such functions as scheduling appointments, requests for replenishment, electronic forms of admission, access to records, assessment of visits and patient education. The patient may also provide other providers with access to this information, which provides communication between the provider.

6. Statistics and reporting

Providers can create reports from databases for statutory purposes. This becomes especially useful in the case of drug recall, health reminders and disease management.
