
Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that people get when mucous membranes or torn skin come into contact with contaminated environmental sources. Rats are the most common reservoir for infection. Common symptoms include fever, chills, body pain, severe headache, meningitis, enlarged liver and spleen, uveitis, kidney failure, coughing and hemoptysis.
Ayurvedic treatment of leptospirosis is aimed at treating symptoms and preventing complications such as hepatic and renal failure. Medicines such as Tribhuvan-Kirti, Lakshmi-Narayan-Ras, Sukshma-Tripkhala, and Maha-Sudarshan-Kurna are used to treat fever. Headache and aching pain can be treated with drugs such as Tripkhala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu, Patiyadi-Kadha, Lagu-Sutchehar-Ras and Godanti-Bhamma. Cough, sore throat and chest pain can be treated with such drugs as Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Kantakari-Avaleha, Vasa-Avaleha, Yashtimadhuk (Glitserriza Glabra) pippali (Piper Longum) Pushkarmul (Inula- racema), Kushtha (Sossurea paw) and catfish (Ephedra vulgaris).
Hemoptiz and bleeding from other places can be treated with drugs such as Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Laxa (refined wax) and Sphatik-Bhasma. Symptoms of meningitis and neurological damage can be treated using drugs such as Kaishore-Guggulu, Panch-Tiqta-Groot-Guggulu, Tapiadi-Loch, Ekang-Vir-Ras, Maha-Wat-Vidvans-Ras, Agnitundi-Vati and Brua-Wat - Chintamani-Ras. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can be treated with drugs such as Lagu-Sutehar-Ras, Shank-Vati, Pravale-Panchamrut-Ras, Kutai-Parpati, Panchumrut-Parpati and Bilva-Avalieha.
Enhanced liver and spleen and jaundice treated with such drugs as arogya-Vardhini, Bhunimbadi-Kadhe, Punarnavadi-Kadhe, Guduchyadi-Kadhe, codend (Pikrorriza kurroa) Tamra-Bhamma, Kalmeh (Andrografika panikulata) Brungray (Eklipta alba) , Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Rohitak (Tecoma undulata) and Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea). Eye involvement can be treated with drugs such as Saptamrut-Lough, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Triphala-Groot, Shatavari (Asparagus-rakmosus) and Tulsi (Osimum-sanctum). Impending renal failure can be treated with drugs such as Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Kadha, Chandraprabha-Vati, Maha-Manjishtadi-Kadha, Saarivadi-Churna and Gomutra-Haritaki.
Most patients with leptospirosis eventually recover completely within a few weeks. Ayurvedic medicines can be prescribed in this state, mainly to speed up the recovery process and prevent serious complications such as meningitis, severe jaundice, respiratory failure and kidney failure.
