California maternity leave - What if complications arise? -2

In California, there is the most comprehensive set of laws protecting women during pregnancy and maternity leave. One law gives Central Asian women additional assistance compared to a federal counterpart. The California Family Rights Act provides significantly longer protection for work in the event of pregnancy complications, and then extended maternity leave. In the event of this situation, extended job protection would be welcome. But can you afford to work all the time? You can, if you plan in advance, and then act quickly.

California Family Law Act

The California Family Rights Act in California is similar to the Federal Family Leave Parental Care Act in that it provides twelve weeks of unpaid work leave. Both laws apply only to employers with more than fifty employees.

California law is different in how a lack of employment is treated for your disability. Suppose you are experiencing pregnancy complications and have to leave work twelve weeks before your delivery. In accordance with federal law, you would use your time protected from work. California law does not consider time from work for your own disability. This applies to the law on termination of pregnancy in California.

7 months of partially paid vacation

Combine the two situations and the laws of California together, and you will get seven months of partially paid leave to work: four months before giving birth if complications arise, plus six weeks to recover from childbirth, plus six weeks to communicate with the child.

California SDI and Paid Family Vacation provide a partial payment of 55% for up to seven months if necessary.

Keep the job, but lose the house?

The good news is California law, which protects your work for a fraction of the time. If this happens to you and you follow the rules, your work will still be open to you. But can you make your mortgage payments in seven months with a 45% salary reduction?

Get additional short-term disability insurance before you get pregnant, and your answer will be YES!
