Choosing the right university course -2

Choosing the right university course is very important to you, as it is likely to determine what you will do for your working life. We already have students who complete their studies and continue to engage in:

  • commerce
  • law
  • engineering
  • Medicine
  • The science
  • arts
Egypt combined the degrees (combinations) of the above.

We will briefly talk about what career each degree belongs to, and our recommendations for each degree.

Which course to choose?

Unlike the choice of HSC items, there are no consequences of scaling or anything that is associated with special rules. A university is purely about yourself - select the course or courses you are interested in. For example, if at HSC you have done a very good job with economics and, as a rule, enjoy the subject, choose Commerce or Economics at a university. If you really enjoy chemistry or biology, focus on medicine, medical science, pharmacy, optometry, physiotherapy or veterinary medicine. There are many possibilities, each of which has a different purpose.

We do not have any specific recommendations about what degree you choose, except that you should definitely choose the course that interests you. Whether you want to earn a high salary or contribute to your business, you will succeed if you choose what you need. It makes no sense to choose Commerce / Law or other highly advanced courses, simply because your UAI was 99+, but you have no interest in commerce and / or law. Students who do this tend to regret their choices after a year or two, while students who choose degrees based on their interests tend to be more effective and better in their degree and future career. There is no substitute for the motivation and natural abilities that you get from what you like, and no matter what you do, if you do it well, you will get what you want (if this is a high salary, recognition, contribution to your field, etc.).

Some general degrees

  • commerce
Trading is one of the most common courses that students choose. This is a good choice and may have the most career options. The most common experts on commerce in reputable universities are: accounting, finance, actuarial studies (UNSW) and marketing. There are other less common specialties.

Trading is the degree you need to choose if you want to be an accountant, or to get financing (working in a bank) or marketing (working in advertising). The fee for these types of work is large, and there is an endless variety of tasks corresponding to all tastes and interests.

Generally speaking, UNSW has the most reputable business school in NSW, so if you want to get into this course, we recommend UNSW as one of the best universities that offer this degree. USYD, Macquarie Uni and UTS are also universities that offer reputable commerce courses.

UAI required for commerce varies from 94-96 for UNSW and USYD, and for other universities - below. As with all references to the necessary UAIs, check the published UAC UAC on the UAC website each time, as they change several times a year depending on supply and demand.

  • Actuarial research
Actuarial studies are ideal for those who are well-versed in mathematics and want to apply this to study at the university and their future career. Actuaries are people who work in large insurance companies that use complex mathematical methods to calculate insurance premiums.

A common misconception of people in this course is that they will become actuaries at the end of their degree. This is most often wrong, as actuarial jobs are in low demand, and most graduates finish their jobs in finance, financial engineering, developing new financial products, etc. This can be quite a profitable area, especially if part of the quantitative team in an investment bank.

For actuaries, the traditionally actuarial degree of Macquarie University is most appreciated. However, the UNSW actuarial degree is also quite popular, and UNSW is generally a more reputable university (especially at the international level), we recommend doing an actuary as part of the UNSW commerce degree.

This requires UAI 95+ for a UNSW commerce rate or slightly higher for Macquarie University.

Legal law leads to a very lucrative career. Law graduates tend to get the most out of all degrees in the long run (yes, even medicine does less!) Students who want to make a lot of money in their future career are encouraged to strive for the Law, even if they don’t want to end up become a lawyer. The reason is that employers of large commercial companies (banks, investment banks, investment firms, accounting firms, trading companies, etc.) strive to find law graduates to fill their high-paying senior positions. Law graduates, as a rule, are high-quality, intelligent, social, verbal and dynamic people, and employers know it.

Although the skills that you acquire in law are large and insignificant (if you are not a lawyer), employers tend to use the fact that you made the law to know that you are smart enough to practice the law. It's like going to the fruit market and picking apples from the premium bin because you know that all the apples you choose are high quality apples. For the same reason, sometimes people who practice medicine are hired by investment banks and management consulting companies (very highly paid jobs), simply because these employers know that all students who study law or medicine tend to be very smart and capable .

Therefore, we recommend that if you get 99 + UAI and want to do business, you can also combine it with the law. This will be a big step forward for your future career.

The law in USYD and UNSW is the same in terms of reputation (they are the best), followed by a law in UTS, then Macquarie, then elsewhere. To enter the law in UNSW and USYD, you will need to get a UAI in the mid-99s. For UTS, this is about 97.

  • Medicine
If you are particularly interested in biology, chemistry and helping others, this is a course you can consider. However, we recommend not to choose drugs for money. We will discuss this point later.

Once upon a time, the drug record was used exclusively on the basis of the UAI. However, he was so highly raised that universities agreed to use the UMAT exam and interviews as additional selection criteria. Officially, the minimum UAI for medicine at reputable universities is 95, but the median entrance for medicine at reputable universities has traditionally been in the low 99s. This is in addition to the UMAT and survey criteria, so medicine can be considered the most competitive course.

However, as has been said, we recommend against medicine as the best choice if you want to make large sums of money in your career. The simple fact is that you will not earn large sums of money until you are 30 years old and in the current conditions of value (remember your arithmetic during the 10th year). It's just not worth it. For the same UAI (and given that you are bright enough to reach 99+), you are better off investing your strong skills to the degree of law (see above). Jobs in law firms, investment banks and other workplaces in high finance conditions can potentially pay a multiple of what a senior doctor can do.

However, take this advice with salt, because, as we said at the beginning of this page, you only get what you want, if you are interested in what you are doing. Therefore, if you like medicine, do it. This is very good, and wages are very high in all respects.

Among the reputable universities offering medicine are: UNSW, USYD (possibly the best), Monash University and Melbourne. The University of Western Sydney has recently started its own medicine course, so if you are dead when you practice medicine but have not reached a high enough level, this is a consideration. Remember that switching between similar courses as soon as you enter the university is easy (we'll talk about this a little later).

  • Other health courses
As we have said, medicine is very good, after which it is easy to get the most competitive university degree. There are alternatives. At reputable universities, Optometry and Vet Science require about UAI 98, about 95 for the pharmacy, about 93 for medical science, and much lower and very affordable physiotherapy.

If you want to get into medicine, but did not receive the necessary UAI or UMAT grades, you can get into one of these health courses and transfer the course to a bachelor’s degree or graduate, depending on the individual universities. regulations.

  • engineering
Engineering is a career-oriented degree for people with a quantitative mood. There are many areas of technology (mining, materials, oil, etc.), and in Australia, mining tends to produce the highest paid and most abundant jobs. Choose this course if you are interested in physics, chemistry and / or mathematics (special mechanics).

Another particularly popular choice is aircraft technology in USYD. The fallacy here is that graduates tend to work for airlines designing airplanes and airplanes (called high-speed aerodynamics). This is an obvious career path, but aeronautical engineering also allows you to work in car companies by developing aerodynamic exterior parts for cars (the so-called low-speed aerodynamics).

The UAI required for this course has a very large range. Some of UAI's advanced courses are: Aviation Engineering in USYD, which is about 92, and Aerospace in USYD, in 99+.

  • Mathematics
If you have a strong interest in mathematics, choose this course at university. A common misconception is that these types of courses (including science and art) do not lead to specific career paths. This is not true. For mathematics, there are jobs in finance that pay very well, because graduates of mathematics can often become actuaries or financial engineers. The fact is that everything you need does not require any particular degree (for example, if you want to be an actuary, you really do not need an actuarial degree). There are professional organizations (for example, CA, CPA for accountants, AIAA for actuaries, law college for lawyers, etc.), which establish examinations and their own criteria. Basically, if you have the skills to pass exams and meet their criteria, you can get this career.

Many graduates of mathematics also continue to work in the field of mechanical engineering, computer science, banking, insurance and other quantitative analyst positions. Only a small number of mathematics graduates enter the academic community (field of research) as teachers and researchers, as most people usually think.

AIA for mathematical degrees is usually low, since demand is not too high for these courses. However, do not be fooled because there is absolutely no correlation between the UAI tolerance and the course. As many will tell you, mathematical degrees (along with engineering and scientific) are very complex and complex, but also very useful for those who are very interested.

USYD offers a BScience (Adv Math) degree that is highly regarded and likely to contain the brightest university students in NSW. Its required UAI is about 98.

  • Science / The Art of Science is a good degree if you are very interested in any science (chemistry, physics or biology). If you are more humanist and enjoy topics such as English, ancient / modern history, languages, social sciences, etc.
We recommend combining these subjects with more career-oriented degrees, such as commerce, engineering, law, medicine, etc. These courses are excellent in that they add flavor to your other degree, and also give you more extensive experience gained in result of a university education that will help your career, whatever that is.

The required UAI for these courses is usually very accessible even in the most reputable universities. Generally speaking, USYD is significantly better than UNSW in terms of compensation, both in the arts and in science.

3-time degree versus 5-year double degree

Students often consider having to do a 3-year ONE degree, or a 5-year DOUBLE degree in their time at the university. In our experience, we recommend combining only if the second degree adds value to your career aspirations. For example, if you choose commerce and think to combine it with art, for example, you should ask yourself what you intend to get out of the arts degree. For example, a good reason to join is that you are learning languages and are going to work abroad in the future.

One thing that students should consider and understand is that a combination of a degree adds 2 years to your degree. Dual degrees tend to 5 years (some exceptions when they are 4 years and some longer). Additional HECS fees that you incur for an additional 2 years should not be taken lightly. Think of a university that costs you 60%! In addition, you need to consider the possibility of an alternative cost (lost opportunity) for 2 years of work. If you finished 2 years ago, you could start your career 2 years younger, so we also need to think about whether to finalize the decision to comb or not.

We believe that the effect of 2 degrees on your rental rate as a future job seeker is overestimated. Graduates of universities with unrelated degrees (for example, straightCom) end up with the same occupation as those who combined (for example, GCom / Science).

Therefore, we recommend the general combination rule only when necessary. Ask people who have gone through university and graduated (s) that you are thinking about. Ask them about whether there is any material benefit from combining degrees in terms of career growth, starting position, starting salary, etc. And making your decision based on the advice you received.

Diploma with honors If you are still enthusiastic about your university education, even after 3-5 years, you can choose an additional year, when you (usually) do research in a specific area of your field and at the end of the year, present a long thesis with your conclusions. The degrees of differences are awarded as modified degrees of the normal degree. For example, if you did the law and honors, it will be LLB (Hons).

An honors degree is admired by employers, as this indicates that the graduate has a defect and more specialized knowledge in his field. Generally speaking, the degree of honors is better than complex. The idea is that everyone can make a difficult degree (just get the UAI you need), but not all are bright enough to get a degree of difference. Therefore, this is another reason why we recommend that you choose a course that you will honestly use, because you will be happy with it.

What if I don't get the AIM I need?

Do not be afraid. Transfer to the university is quite simple. Moving between universities or at one university involves the calculation of a rank mark similar to UAI. 25% of this score will be based on your latest UAI ranking, and 75% will be based on your WAM university (weighted average), which basically corresponds to how well you have completed at the university so far.

Therefore, if you do not get the UAI that you need for your desired course, we strongly recommend that you choose a course that you enjoy. If you choose something that does not suit you, you will not be able to score enough high WAM to translate into the course you want.

As a rule, for most popular courses at reputable universities, you will need an average difference (WAM> 75) after the first year to be able to successfully transfer your desired course to the second year ahead. We also recommend that you take a course that is closely related to the degree to which you want to get.

For example, a very popular use of this technique for entering into law in USYD or UNSW (because not everyone can get 99 + UAI) is first enrolled in commerce at these universities. Once you are in the trade, during your first year, while everyone else is busy, carefully read and compare the average.
