Do you suffer from heartburn, reflux or belching? You may find yourself on medicine to help strengthen your tummy. I wrote about digestive disorders several times earlier, but this time I would like to write specifically about a small bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. Helicobacter pylori bacterial infection is recognized as the most common bacterium for infection of the population worldwide. You can easily identify the next problem, and if you do, do not despair. You can actually get rid of heartburn, reflux, or low-grade nausea that affects so many people.
Helicobacter is a smart little bug.
In 1982, when Australian doctor Barry Marshall identified a new bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (HP) as an infectious agent responsible for peptic ulcer disease, he completely changed medicine in terms of microbiology and human stomach disease. Your stomach is protected from its own gastric juice with a thick layer of mucus that covers the lining of the stomach. HP uses this protection, actually living in the mucous membrane. As soon as this clever little mistake is safe in this mucous membrane, it is able to fight with the acid of the stomach, which comes to it with the help of the enzyme it possesses, is called urease. Urease converters urea, of which in the stomach (from saliva and gastric juice) contains a rich supply, in bicarbonate and ammonia, which are strong (alkaline) bases. This creates a cloud of acid-neutralizing chemicals around H. pylori, protecting it from acid in the stomach. This cloud is also part of the reflux and belching process that occurs in many HP people.
The contribution to HP protection lies in the fact that the body’s natural defenses cannot achieve these mistakes in this gastric mucosa. The immune system will respond to HP infection by sending killer T cells (leukocytes) and other agents that infect the infection. However, these potential H. pylori eradicators cannot reach the infection because they cannot easily pass through the lining of the stomach. They do not go away - the immune response only grows and grows over time. White cells die and spill their destructive compounds into the cells lining the stomach lining. More nutrients are sent to revitalize white cells, and H. pylori can feed on it. For several days, gastritis, and sometimes peptic ulcers, leads to lining your tummy. And, of course, a person who suffers is often blissfully unaware, uses an antacid or an acid-resistant drug for a long time and continues to eat and drink foods that only aggravate the healing process in the long term. Therefore, they return to the doctor, only to be told to stay on the medicine. A few years later, the person accepted the fact that they would always demand that this “medicine” cure their condition. Yes, and Alice lived happily in Wonderland.
To confirm that HP caused gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, Marshall absorbed bacterial cultures and reduced gastritis (inflammation of the gastric mucosa). He then underwent endoscopy (internal examination of the stomach) and provided biopsies, of which the alleged error was re-isolated.
Changing medical beliefs and practice takes time. For almost 100 years, scientists and doctors believed that ulcers were caused by a multitude of stresses, spicy foods, and abundant alcohol. The treatment included bed rest and a diet with a soft diet and food. Later, the researchers added stomach acid to the list of causes and started treating ulcers with antacids when they became fashionable. Unfortunately for poor Barry no one believed him. In fact, he was actually referred to ridicule and contempt when he first proposed the idea that bacteria really lived in a hostile environment of the stomach. Until 1982, the accepted medical paradigm was “without acid, without ulcer,” and that stomach ulcers occurred only when excess acid damaged the stomach wall and that all treatment should be aimed at reducing or neutralizing all this bad acid. Of course, you remember television commercials with a man painted on his tummy, with a felt pen telling you that the acid should "stay there." These commercials, as a rule, appeared after dinner, the time when your tummy is likely to play, I can not help but think about how many of these sufferers probably have an undetected H.pylori infection. There are still many drugs in this acid reflux problem. Unfortunately, many such patients today are still considered “too much acid in the stomach” and are being treated with antacids or gastric acid blockers as a first-line therapy, when in my clinical experience the opposite is true, they lack or have in sorting. Gastric juice consists of digestive enzymes and concentrated hydrochloric acid, which can easily digest food or kill microorganisms. A low level of acid in the stomach increases the likelihood of survival. It used to be thought that there were no bacteria in the stomach, and in fact it was sterile, and it took an Australian doctor to prove that all the experts in the world were wrong.
It seems rather stupid to treat the acid problem all the time, without actually asking why it is belching, reflux and upper abdominal discomfort in the first place. Albert Szent-Györgyi (1937th Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology and Medicine) said: "The discovery is to see what everyone has seen and think about that no one thought." Today it is established that most cases of peptic ulcers and gastritis, diseases that affect millions of people around the world, are the result of this HP infection, and not “too much acid” in the stomach in general.

Infection and Prevalence of HP
H. pylori is believed to be transmitted orally. Do you wash your hands? Many researchers believe that HP is orally transmitted using fecal matter through ingestion of contaminated food or water. In addition, it is possible that H. pylori can be transmitted from the stomach to the mouth through reflux or the esophagus of the gastro-esophagus, all common symptoms of gastritis. Then the bacterium could be transmitted through oral contact.
HP infection remains a huge problem, it is extremely common and infects more than a billion people worldwide. It is estimated that half of the American population over the age of 60 was infected with H. pylori at some stage, and the economic effect of a peptic ulcer in the United States (as indicated in a 1989 data study) showed that the cost of the disease was then almost $ 6 billion a year. ($ 2.66 billion for hospitalization, not including doctor’s fees), outpatient care ($ 1.62 billion) and loss of labor productivity ($ 1.37 billion).
One of the five Australians and qiwis has HP, according to Dr. Barry Marshall, the infection usually persists for many years, leading to peptic ulcer in 10-15% of those infected. H. pylori occurs in more than 80% of patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers. You can imagine that this common complaint in New Zealand and Australia is in terms of medications, doctor visits and loss of productivity at work. HP's early research characterized much of the work ahead, the data that came from examining all of these samples was completely unexpected. This showed that HP is actually a common bacterial agent and that an amazing 30-50% of the world's population colonizes it.
How do you know if you have an HP error?
The infection manifests itself differently in different people. In some people, it causes more acid in the stomach, and an ulcer can occur. In other cases, gastrointestinal suppression or a complete deficiency (which we call achlorhydria) may occur, and these people may have an increased risk of stomach cancer. It is unclear why some people react in one way or another.
Typical manifestations of Helicobacter pylori infection:
· Nausea or weak feeling of nausea. Maybe vomiting.
· Avoid chili, garlic, or certain foods that are “inconsistent” with your tummy.
· Bloating worse after eating. Feeling worse after eating or certain foods.
· Periodic abdominal pain, intestinal cramps.
· Peptic or duodenal ulcers (more than 90% of all cases have HP)
· Burping, it can be very bad. Perhaps a person has a reputation!
· Heartburn and possibly dependent on Quick-Eze or Gavascon, Losec, etc.
Diarrhea or constipation after several years of infection.
Anxious sleep, perhaps awakening with a hollow feeling or heartburn. I knew that some patients support the head of the bed with several bricks.
· Symptoms worsen at night or worsen.
· Vitamin B12 deficiency. Ask your test subject to check that you may not be enough.
· Changed appetite, sometimes you may feel like food, sometimes you do not.
· After infection for several years, you may have a deficiency of minerals, which can lead to many health problems.
· Helicobacter pylori is involved in Hashimoto thyroiditis.
Migraine headaches (40% of migraine sufferers are positive, and eradication reduces headaches).
· Acne Rosacea. Helicobacter pylori is thought to cause rosacea (HP eradication often leads to a significant reduction in rosacea symptoms).
It is not surprising that a sick stomach supposedly has to do its job, that is, to digest and absorb foods effectively when a bacterial infection causes such a dysfunction? Your doctor may have originally prescribed medicine for your stomach, such as Losec, Gavascon or Milanta, to block or dilute the acid. How should your tummy work now? Then you come back and complain that the symptoms have not changed. What then? You can understand what I mean, after many years of this infection, you feel completely unwell. I see one person or more every week like this, and have done it for years. When a few years ago I wrote an article in our local newspaper about HP, I received almost ten calls. And almost all of these patients had HP infection, they were all either in Losek, and in Quick-Eze, Gavascon, or in Mylanta.
Conventional HP therapy
Please note it is extremely important to get an accurate diagnosis before trying to find a cure for heartburn or reflux. Many diseases of the stomach or digestive system and conditions have common symptoms: if you treat yourself for an abnormal disease or a specific symptom of a complex disease, you can delay the legal treatment of a serious selection problem, and stomach cancer. In other words, the greatest danger in self-treatment can be self-diagnosis. Always work with your doctor, preferably with someone who is experiencing gastrointestinal disturbances. If you do not know what you really have, you simply cannot treat it!
I have always had serious concerns about the heavy use of antibiotics needed to treat people with HP. Routine medical cleaning of HP from the stomach requires therapy for 10 to 14 days using several drugs. I take care that long-term or recurrent antibiotic treatment changes the normal microbial population of the entire gastrointestinal tract, eliminating many beneficial bacteria, as well as HP, allowing the sufferer to develop an intestinal environment that may contain bugs, such as Candida albicans, proteus or a whole host. other undesirable persons. You get rid of one problem, only to create another.
Triple therapy
Using only one drug to treat H. pylori never recommended doctor marshall. At this time, the most common treatment is a two-week course of treatment, called "triple therapy." This includes taking two antibiotics to kill the bacteria and either an acid suppressor or medicine that protects the stomach. A two-week triple therapy reduces the symptoms of ulcers, kills bacteria, and prevents the recurrence of ulcers in many patients, but relapses can reach 75%. Complete eradication is difficult, I had many patients who came to me after triple therapy many years ago with an average of poor results and many years later were placed in an acid blocker. I recommend this for some persistent cases, and have been known to send some patients to GP for triple therapy, and then conduct natural treatment for 6 weeks. I have found that some patients may complicate triple therapy because it involves taking 3 types of medication and up to 20 tablets per day. In addition, antibiotics and bismuth preparations used in triple therapy can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark stools, metallic taste in the mouth, dizziness, headache, and yeast infections, especially in women.
HP Testing
The diagnosis of H. pylori infection is traditionally associated with endoscopy with biopsy of the gastric mucosa. There are three ways to test HP now in New Zealand. Honestly, I only periodically authorize the HP test these days and, as a rule, I experience the “gut feeling” of a person that this error once enters my room and complains about the above symptoms. Common sense - the patient will soon tell you whether they are or are not improving, and it only takes three to four weeks to really know what is happening. Just because the test results are returned negatively, you can still get this error. You already know me, please do not analyze paralysis! If you feel much better after treating HP, whether pharmaceutical or natural, you probably have HP regardless of the test results. Remember - to one of the five New Zealanders this infection, so the chances are quite high you have.
· Urea breath test The diagnostic method relies on the urea reaction present, as mentioned earlier. This is a sound test - 90 - 95% success in collecting HP errors.
· Blood test antibody levels of HP were determined. However, these tests have suboptimal sensitivity and specificity (85% and 79%).
· Antibody Stool Testing - again, many factors can affect the result of this test, stay with the breath. Many experts say that the fecal antigen test is bullet proof, but in my experience I have seen a lot of “false negatives” when testing. That is, the results come back all good, but the patient reacts sharply after treatment with HP.
HP natural destruction
There is no clear indication for the specific treatment of each individual case of HP related gastritis. I found the following treatments effective and for many years used various treatments. Here are some treatments that I have found to work in various cases of HP. Remember that the recurrence rate is quite high, so you can continue the treatment until you feel much better, and then hang there for a few more months (to reduce the level of treatment) to be absolutely sure. I recommend treatment in blocks of 6 weeks, then wait 2-3 weeks, then another 6-week treatment period. Good clinical advice for you: always treat this infection by taking something while eating, as well as something in between or away from food. It is intended to truly manage the “kill” treatment at home, and allows the treatment to have access to HP errors in the intestine, as well as to some extent from the consumption of food and gastric juice. I have a statement in my clinic: perseverance breaks resistance. Do you remember Winston Churchill? - never give up, never give up, never give up.
· Manuka honey, which has a high level of hydrogen peroxide and has been shown in studies to be active against H. pylori. Go to Comvita high od umf manuka honey.
Propolis works really well for some, but gloomy for others.
· Vitamin B12 - check this in the blood! Here you may not be enough.
· After the end of antibiotic treatment (triple therapy), it makes sense to rebuild the intestinal flora with Lactobacillus species. However, they will not cure the condition. (A trial in 2002 showed that the mixed acidophilus preparation could not eradicate H.pylori infection in patients on whom it was tested).
· DGL (Deglycyrrhizin Licorice) - you can get it in capsules or liquids.
· Aloe vera helps to treat the gastrointestinal mucosa.
· Berberine is found in Goldenseal grass and can be used as a natural herbal antibiotic.
· Eat grapefruit seeds, for some it is very effective for a long time. The extract is even better.
· Digestive enzymes can also be beneficial - especially with achlorhydria (low in stomach)
