Many people with disabilities are in wheelchairs in America and simply cannot afford them. One way to get a wheelchair, wheelchair, or scooter is through Medicare / Medicaid insurance programs. Access to a wheelchair through Medicare and Medicaid can be obtained free of charge for the recipient, this is not guaranteed. Medicaid wheelchairs are available if you know how to get them.
Medicaid program:
Medicaid is a government-subsidized health program designed to help people who fall into the low-income category to receive adequate health care by providing additional Medicare coverage to the primary state-subsidized insurer. Medicare and Medicaid are routines that cover durable medical equipment. Wheelchairs, power chairs and scooters are considered durable medical equipment and therefore are eligible for coverage in most cases.
How it works:
Most people who have additional Medicaid insurance also have Medicare primary coverage. Medicare typically covers 80% of the cost of the medical wheelchair required, if the Medicare recipient has part B coverage that covers outpatient services, including doctors; visits and durable medical equipment, and underwent a full medical examination by an approved doctor. Conditions that guarantee the necessary medical wheelchair include: a condition of the spine, brain or muscle tissue that prohibits the normal use of the patient's legs, the inability to build up shoulder strength due to spinal, brain or muscle conditions or any other condition that made the patient would be bedridden if not for the wheelchair.
Regardless of whether the additional Medicaid coverage will receive a tab for the remaining 20%, an independent Medicaid review will be completely dependent. Medicaid is not required to approve coverage, even if Medicare has it.
Result:
There is no guarantee for a free Medicaid wheelchair, power chair or scooter, and those companies that make such promises should be considered with caution. Since 2003, Medicare and Medicaid have established much stricter guidelines for determining who qualifies for wheelchair access and the amount they will pay for such equipment, being the victim of several unscrupulous companies who signed insurers for thousands of dollars in Fraudulent claims and astronomical prices. Medicaid recipients who are considered disabled and need a wheelchair should work closely with both Medicare and Medicaid to understand what costs will be covered and what restrictions will be imposed when searching for a wheelchair, and whether or not their state is under a closed state category.
