Medical Assistant Job Description

duties

Medical assistants help general practitioners, surgeons, specialists or other licensed health care professionals with a wide range of tasks. Responsibilities are completed under the guidance of a practitioner for what the person works for.

Tasks performed by the assistant may include direct contact with patients or they may be administrative in nature. Although the assistant must perform an exhaustive list of duties, not all duties must be performed daily. Tasks that may be required to perform will vary depending on the type of object in which it works.

Administrative duties

Responsibilities that are not related to contact with the patient are common. These may include scheduling appointments, cleaning and disinfecting the examination rooms, or appropriate insurance companies or medical facilities. Entering data into a computer system to store accurate records and billing the appropriate party for medical services is also a task, which is often completed by a physician assistant.

Although these responsibilities are not related to one-on-one contact with patients, they are almost always part of the description of the work of the medical assistant. This is due to the fact that such duties are vital for the conduct of any medical practice.

Clinical responsibilities

Nursing assistants may also be called upon to help practitioners during the examination of patients. Responsibilities may also include collecting samples for diagnostic purposes, accepting vital signs and collecting information from the patient about his or her medical history. Additional responsibilities may include coordinating the refilling of drugs by communicating with the pharmacy and the practitioner. The medical assistant may also be asked to talk with patients about their medications and how to use them properly.

The ability to multitask and strictly follow the instructions are characteristics that must be possessed if he or she wants to find a job as an assistant as soon as possible. Aspiring assistants should always be prepared to seek help from a medical doctor for all that he or she works.

Those interested in such an activity should be familiar with the job descriptions of the physician assistant, as well as the laws in his or her state regarding education and licensing. Regardless of the reasons for finding a job in the medical care profession, those who do this will most likely find it useful and worth the effort.
