You can work with any number of different groups of patients and with all kinds of talented medical specialists. So what is diagnostic medical sonography?
Specialization in neurosonography means that you are a diagnostic medical sonograph or sonography specialist who works specifically with the nervous system, which includes the brain and other parts of the body. You can also specialize in neonatal neurosonography, in which case you will work on the study and diagnosis of the nervous system and neurological disorders that occur in infants, usually those born prematurely. This is a very specific area of sonography that is vital to the medical community.
Neurographs are responsible for the work of transducers to perform sonograms in their patients, like all other sonographs. However, what makes neurosonographs different is that they use special beam shapes and frequencies, which, unlike those used by abdominal and obstetric sonographs.
You will need at least a two-year degree to enter this field, if not a four-year degree, and you must pass a certification or licensing exam. As a neurograph, you can expect to work in a hospital, clinic, or private doctor’s office, although there may be other types of environments in which you could find work. Most of your work will probably take place in dark rooms where diagnostic imaging machines are located, but in some cases you can also perform patient procedures right at their bedside. You need to be ready to work long hours on your feet and cope with stressful situations, especially with chronically ill patients. You may also need working hours and weekends.
