Treatment of back and joint pain in Chinese medicine -2

Anyone who has experienced a painful injury is too well aware of its consequences, especially the attendant discomfort and loss of mobility. The pain is the most frequent reason for consulting doctors in the United States and leads to the fact that half of Americans seek medical help every year. Chronic pain is the third most common health problem and affects productivity, mobility and quality of life.

Pain is associated with a feeling that hurts. If you feel pain, hurt, you feel discomfort, suffering, and possibly agony, depending on the severity of it. The pain can be steady and constant, in which case it can be pain. It may be a throbbing pain — a throbbing pain. The pain may have a feeling of constriction or stabbing. Only a person who is in pain can properly describe it. Pain is a very personal experience.

This article highlights several herbal formulas and supplements that we often use in the clinic to help alleviate acute or chronic pain.

In Chinese medicine, physical injuries, both old and new, are considered to be related to the stasis syndrome. When something does not move, it creates a trap and discomfort. The quality of pain depends on what is blocked — blood, qi, yang, etc. Injuries that do not heal for a typical time — several weeks — may be complicated by other syndromes such as constitutional (for example, blood deficiency, qi stagnation) and (for example, the onset of wind or moisture).

Often, when patients complain of pain in any part of the limb, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knees, etc., I often choose a suitable formula, such as Pueraria 10 or Angelica 14, which may be suitable for shoulder pain , neck and head, with their emphasis on wind dispersion and qi regulation. For fatigue and inflammation of the tendons, Acanthopanax 10 provides pain relief and toning to help strengthen activity.

For traumatic injuries, such as physical injuries or falls, I consider formulas such as San Qi 17 and Myrrh Tablets, which are blood and formulas for reviving the blood. Both formulas include myrrh, frankincense, peach, kartkhaus, tang-kiei, peony (white or red), cinnamon and turmeric.

Repeated stress, old injuries and persistent pain in the joints are usually treated by adding toning along with herbs that resist wind intrusion. Joint problems can be assessed by Chiang-huo 13 for wind accumulation or Drynaria 12 for deficiency syndrome.

For lower back pain, I would consider a formula such as Eucommia 18 in combination with Acanthopanax 10. Eucommia 18 contains a lot of tonic and blood transported herbs. In many cases, back pain consists of narrow or nodular muscles. The principle of treatment is to remove toxins, feed the blood and relax the muscles and tendons.

Chinese herbs, acupuncture, cupping, massage, relaxation techniques, and dietary changes are some of the many things you can do to help you find relief from your pain.
