When I first took up survival, I began reading the Encyclopedia or Life in the Country. I remember telling my wife about planting, growing and harvesting grain when she said: “We live in an apartment in the middle of the city. It was a good question, and it made me overestimate my plans. you are going to start preparing, you need to think about your particular situation and what you are cooking.
There are many definitions of “survival” on the Internet (or “prepper”), but essentially it is someone who is preparing for any emergency, such as a hurricane, an economic collapse, a nuclear war, etc., to have a minimal impact on his or her lifestyle. There are many types of survivors who focus on different types of preps, depending on their situation and what they expect. Here are the most common scenarios that relate to survivors:
- Aliens and AI. The possibility of invading extraterrestrial beings or the growth of artificial intelligence does not really concern me personally. However, there is a growing movement of people who are worried about these things and are preparing accordingly. This may mean the presence of a manor in a country where they can be isolated and self-sufficient until the crisis passes.
- Biochemical. The concern here is related to fatal diseases and chemicals such as anthrax, cholera, HIV, SARS, swine flu, etc. D. One of them can happen by chance or by a group of terrorists. This means the purchase of respirators, gloves, disinfectants, plastic sheets and other items related to sanitation and hygiene.
- Economic. This is a very popular problem right now, and for good reason. Over-spending and monetary manipulations by the government and central banks could lead to a new deflationary depression, for example, in the 1930s in the United States or in a hyperinflationary scenario, as in modern Zimbabwe. Preparing for this means turning your wealth from money into things that retain their value, such as food, water, weapons and ammunition, precious metals and other things that may become rare or too expensive.
- Eschatological. Many Christians believe that current events are the fulfillment of prophecies, such as those made in the Book of Revelation, and that they will live to see the return of Jesus Christ. Most believe that their savior will save them before the period of time known as tribulation (when the antichrist turns the Earth into a world dictatorship). Others believe that they will have to survive these days before Jesus returns and focuses on the long-term preservation of food and self-sufficiency.
- Malthusian. This movement returns to Thomas Malthus, who believes that exponential growth will ultimately lead to limited resources, such as food, water and energy. Many supporters believe that widespread hunger and disease will bring the population back into equilibrium with Earth’s resources. Again, food, water storage and self-sufficiency are the way to prepare for this scenario.
- Medicine. Has to do with preparing for more common medical emergencies, such as car accidents, choking, drowning, etc. These people usually know the Heimlick maneuver or how to perform CPR and understand the basics of the human body and healthy vital signs. They stock up first-aid kits, medicines and treatment books, and often donate blood or volunteers for the Red Cross.
- Natural disaster, brief. There are many short-term catastrophes: earthquakes, blizzards, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, etc. Here, the focus is on strengthening doors and windows, as well as ensuring sufficient food and other supplies until help arrives. . Usually this includes collecting or collecting a bag with an error.
- Natural disaster, long-term. A prolonged natural disaster may be something like a multi-year weather cycle that kills crops with heat, cold, too much or too little rain, etc. People preparing for this supply of several tons of food and probably have a greenhouse and non-hybrid seeds.
- Natural disaster, permanent. Something that can go on for many generations - ever since - for example, global warming, a new ice age, or a big meteor strike. You have to be a pretty hardcore survivor to get ready for this. To survive, you will need a bunker with enough food, water and supplies to last a lifetime.
- Peak oil production. Peak oligomers, like the Malthusians, believe that the exponential function will be our fall. The idea is that people use too much oil, and over the next few decades, oil will become leaner and more expensive. And since the relations of our society with oil will have devastating consequences for the economy and infrastructure. To survive, people would have to learn to live with very little, if any, electricity and possessions.
- Rawlesian. Followers of James Wesley Rawls, who wrote several books on survival and runs the site SurvivalBlog.com. These people are usually conservative gun owners who prepare for all kinds of disasters and have homestead (a piece of land where they can be self-confident).
- Security. Involves the preparation and avoidance of life-threatening situations, such as fires, home invasions, lightning strikes, plane crashes, snake bites and other similar emergencies. For example, a rescue rescuer usually owns a fire extinguisher. A good book for this type is the worst-case survival guide.
- Self defense Here, the focus is on the survival of violent encounters with dangerous people and, as a rule, requires preparation for the perception of danger, martial arts and the use of weapons such as knives and weapons, and the protection of the house.
- Technological. Possible scenarios include vague power outages, computer viruses that lead to stopping commerce, nanotechnology, and other technological disasters. The focus is on learning to survive and thrive without electricity and technology, using skills such as cooking without food.
- Wilderness. It is associated with survival alone when they get lost / stuck in the desert after an airplane crash, shipwreck, hike, etc. These people have survival kits for food, water purifiers, medical equipment and navigation equipment and have skills like start a fire.
- World War. The threat of nuclear war was a major problem during the Cold War, but it is still relevant today because of the entanglement in the Middle East and rogue states such as North Korea. War-ridden people usually have an air-raid shelter and all kinds of food and supplies.
- Zombies Many people are also preparing for the fact that, whether supernatural or biological causes, the dead can come back to life and cause damage to society. It is more likely that people can become infected with an extremely contagious form of rabies. Preparing for these opportunities means stocking up with a variety of guns and ammunition and having either a safe retreat or a great BOV with all the necessary materials.
If you are new to all this, the number of potential disasters can be very overwhelming, and it can be difficult to decide where to start. I suggest you conduct your own research, decide which of the above scenarios suits you best, and start preparing accordingly. For example, I began by focusing on what, in my opinion, is the most likely scenario: an economic crisis. I started with a supply of food, water, and items that I can trade if a new Great Depression appears. Since then, I have expanded in the run-up to natural disasters and world war.
Decide what type of survivors you are and start from there.
