Athens, Georgia “As well as being home to a reliable college campus (University of Georgia), this city offers many opportunities for the retirement community. With Athens, you get everything that a big city (Atlanta is 70 miles from here) offers without any headaches. The classic city offers low prices for housing, golf courses, football games, an active city center and an excellent health care system. To top it all, the University of Georgia allows Athens residents over the age of 62 to audit courses free of charge. UGA also has an exceptional lifelong learning program, which is definitely worth checking out.
Durham, NC - Except for some hot summer days, you will experience mostly mild weather throughout the year. Durham is also home to many golf courses, parks, museums and the new performing arts center, which has painted A-list performers and Broadway shows. Not to mention the fact that at Duke University there is one of the best university medical centers in the country.

Seattle, WA “It’s hard to think of Seattle as a big city, because of course it’s not like one.” The overwhelming nature that may exist in New York or Chicago does not exist in Seattle. It is a city better known as a cultural and artistic center. From many museums and concert halls in Seattle to numerous outdoor activities, you will never be at a loss for something. For those who love history and architecture, this will be one of the best cities for retirement. Historic houses inhabit the city. streets Be sure to visit some of the many historical walking routes.
Austin TX “This one could easily have been included in the list of the city of college or in the list of large cities. Austin as a whole is just a great city to live in. And often the big cities in which you live when you work are also the beautiful cities you live in when you retire. As in many of the best cities of colleges, this complex offers many cultural and artistic events. The city is immersed in magnificent countryside and is surrounded by many lakes. It also has a vibrant music scene, affordable housing and a moderate cost of living,
The best retirement cities that are small
Prescott, AZ - Pensioners who want to avoid 4 million residents in the metropolitan Phoenix region have found an excellent alternative in Prescott. The story you find here makes it a wonderful place to look. Only Prescott has 800 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Add to this a great community for retirement, affordable housing, a variety of outdoor activities, and an incredible landscape, and you have a little piece of the sky.
Northampton, Massachusetts - I think you can see the trend developing here. Regardless of which list each city appears on, many of the best retirement cities have colleges nearby. There are actually five schools in or near the city of Northampton, including Smith College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Northampton is slightly smaller than Prescott, but no less picturesque. There are many golf courses, museums, libraries and ski resorts in and around the city. For those of you who are ready to continue your education, retirees can join Five College Learning in Retirement. Membership allows you to participate in various seminars and workshops.
As you can see, I am a big supporter of retirement in or near college cities. For people who are more interested in a lazy retirement with a small number of events, then certainly an optimistic and active city-college is not the best choice. However, anyone who wants to stay active and truly enjoy retirement knows that many college cities are some of the best retirement cities.
