The classic Irish song Raglan Road is one of the greatest love poems of the last century - but it was a disconnected rubbish about cabbage and turnips that led to its writing.
The song began life as a poem by the great Irish writer Patrick Kavan. He was a self-styled peasant poet, because he often wrote about land and farming issues, even when it came to vegetables.
In the early 1940s, Kavana fell in love with a beautiful young medical student named Hilda Moriarty. He first saw her on Raglan Road in Dublin, on the street that ever gave the song its name.
On the part of Kavanag, he felt that the relationship would fail and cause his heartache. However, he could not stop himself from hurrying like lovers.
Kavanah summed up this dilemma with the words: I saw danger, and yet I walked the magical path. "
He managed to start a relationship with Moriarty, and they shared with each other in the early 1940s. This could not continue, although it ended in just a few months.
More than 40 years later, Moriarty was interviewed by Irish television about his relationship with Kavana. She said that the main reason they broke up was due to the age between them. At that time, she was only 22, and Cavana - more than 40.
She felt that it was too wide a gap to break.
However, Kavana did not leave completely empty-handed. Shortly before their separation, they discussed poetry.
Moriarty read some of his poems and was not particularly impressed. She didn’t like agricultural topics and teased him for writing about turnips, cabbage and potatoes. She encouraged him to write about something else that would be of broader interest.
Kavanah said he would. The relationship ended before he could keep his promise, but he soon passed. He wrote a poem about a breakup called Dark Haired Miriam Run.
Miriam was just a pseudonym for protecting the identity of Hilda Moriarty.
Later, Kavana put a poem on an old Irish melody called Dawn of the Day, and it became a favorite song among folk artists, first in Ireland and then around the world.
The original name was forgotten, and it became known as Raglan Road, taken from the first line of the song and describing where the couple first met.
