 Yeast Infection Medicines -2

Nystatin is an antifungal drug usually prescribed to treat mold and yeast infections. It is considered a reliable medicine for the treatment of oral or gastrointestinal diseases associated with Candida species.

Nystatin is a proven remedy for cutaneous, vaginal, mucous, and esophageal candidiasis. It is even prescribed for the treatment of neonatal oral thrush older than one month. However, for younger children, miconazole is a suitable alternative medicine.

So, how does Nystatin cure your candida infection?

Nystatin attaches to ergosterol, which is the main component of the cell membrane of the fungus, Candida albicans or any fungus in this regard. When nystatin is present in sufficient quantities in the cell membrane of the fungus, it can form pores in the membrane, causing potassium ions flowing from the cell, leading to death of the fungus.

Why drug does not affect people?

The reason is that ergosterol is quite unique to the cell membranes of fungi. Therefore, it does not have any catastrophic effects on animals or people. In addition, since nystatin is not absorbed in the intestine, it is safe to drink orally and has no problems with the interaction with the drug, especially if you are taking other medications.

However, nystatin does cause some side effects, but not everyone is susceptible to this. Some side effects are itching, irritation and burning in the vagina when used to treat that part of the body. For tablets and liquid nystatin, these are common side effects: diarrhea, upset stomach, stomach pain, and skin rash. If you think that the side effect is too great, it is better to consult a doctor.

What are the forms of Nystatin Plus, when and how to use it?

Tablet or lozenge (lozenges): Nystatin tablets are usually smoothed with water, and the lozenges are dismembered in the mouth rather than swallowed or chewed. It is much more effective in treating oral thrush. Then continue to use Nystatin lozenges, even if the symptoms of oral thrush have decreased. Use nystatin lozenges for another two days.

Liquid form: a bottle of nystatin liquid must be clearly visible before each use so that the medicine is evenly distributed. For genital infections, use it three to five times a day. Thus, place half the dose of liquid on each side of the mouth and swing it and rinse it for a minute and swallow. After that, do not immediately drink water. Wait at least five minutes before doing this. For intestinal infections, take the medication three times a day and simply swallow it directly without rinsing or whistling.

Vaginal tablets and cream: Nystatin vaginal tablets and creams are usually applied once or twice a day on the vaginal area. Tablets are almost always used within two weeks for women who are not pregnant. While pregnant women can also use nystatin for three to six weeks before giving birth.

Here are some directions to follow when inserting tablets or creams into the vagina. First read the instructions before running the application. Along with a cream or tablet, a special applicator is used; fill the applicator to the specified level. Then lie down on the bed, face up, with knees bent, apart and feet on the bed. Relax, then gently insert the applicator into the vagina (as high as possible) and press the plunger to release the medication. After that, remove the applicator and wash it with soap and warm water when you wash your hands so as not to spread the yeast infection.

Further recommendations: you can use sanitary napkins to protect your underwear and clothing from stains. However, the tampon is not recommended because it will only absorb the drug. Do not take a shower if it is not prescribed by a doctor, and continue to use Nystatin, even if you have a period in the middle of the treatment.

If you miss a dose, give the medicine as soon as you remember it, or if the next dose is already there, skip the one you missed and never try to double the dose to replenish the one you missed.
