The “hand and ulcer” disease is a moderate but highly contagious viral infection that is common in young children and spreads from person to person because of unwashed hands or contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include fever; sore throat; rashes and blisters on the tongue, mouth, palms and feet; Headache; fatigue; irritability; and loss of appetite. Infection most often occurs due to coxsackievirus and is usually observed in child care facilities. Infected adults may not show signs and symptoms of the disease.

Ayurvedic treatment of hand and ulcer diseases is aimed at treating the symptoms and preventing complications such as viral meningitis and encephalitis. Medications such as Tribhuvan-Kirti, Laxmi-Narayan-Ras, and Maha-Sudarshan-Churna are used to treat fever. Headache and sore throat can be treated with drugs such as Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Tripkhala-Guggulu and Sukshma-Triphala. Fatigue can be treated with drugs such as Arjunarisht, Dashmularisht, Schrung-Bhamma and Lakshmi-Vilas-Ras. Irritability can be treated with Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Khurasani ova (Hyoscyamus niger) and Jayphal (Myristica fragrans). Loss of appetite can be treated with drugs such as Shank-Vati, Lagu-Suthehar, Vishva (Zinziber officinalis), Pippali (Piper longum) and Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica).

Rashes and blisters in the mouth and on the hands and feet can be treated with the help of such medications as Maha-Manjishtadi-Kadha, Saarivadi-Churna, Gandhak-Rasayan, Panch-Tikta-Groot-Guggulu, Yashtimaduk (Glyceriza Glabra, Manjishtha ), Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Rakta-Chandan (Pterocarpus santalinus), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissamopeashearebearea-arabiidis wea-a-heidisis), we can use the same template, as used by us. ). They are more effective in combination with a local application containing Manjishtha, Saariva, Haridra, Chandan (Santalum album) and Mandukparni (Centella asiatica). Other medications, such as Panch-Tikta-Groot, Yashtimaduk-Groot and Satadhout-Groot, can also be used topically. Medicines such as Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani can be used to prevent and treat meningitis and encephalitis.

Most patients suffering from this disease usually recover in 7–10 days. It is important to maintain adequate oral rehydration of affected children. The prevention of this disease is equally important, with the adoption of proper hygienic measures and the temporary isolation of infected and infectious people.
