In the journal Ethnopharmacology, published in 1999, a study of people using hibiscus-tizan significantly reduces blood pressure in people with moderate hypertension.

The results of the 2004 clinical study were published in the medical journal Phytomedicine. This clinical study examined the effect of hibiscus tea from the plant Hibicus sabdariffa on captopril with strong blood pressure in patients with mild hypertension. The participants in this clinical study were given daily hibiscus tizan or captopril for 4 weeks. The results were unexpected. Drinking hibiscus was just as effective as the drug, captopril, in reducing the pressure of the participants.

A study published in the Journal of Human Hypertension in 2008 compared patients with diabetes and high blood pressure. In this study, researchers compared the differences between black tea and hibiscus tea with blood pressure. Each group was asked to drink hibiscus tea or black tea twice a day for one month. Once again, those participants who drink hibiscus tea have significantly changed the reduction in blood pressure. Those participants who drank black tea had a slight increase in blood pressure, which was believed to be associated with the effect of caffeine on the body.

Hibiscus tizan considered very safe. Its mode of action can be a powerful diuretic or a “water pill”. It has little interaction with drugs; however, an enthusiastic consumption of hibiscus tea can cause hypotension if you already take one or more high blood pressure medications.

This reduction is significant, as the National High Blood Pressure Program notes that only a 3 percent reduction in pressure can significantly reduce the likelihood of a stroke or heart attack. Even more surprising was the effect of drinking this herbal tea on people with moderately high blood pressure. These individuals turned out to be helpful even more than people who started with mild hypertension.

The medical community quickly states, although this is a very important conclusion; he still needs a lot more research to understand what full long-term effect this tea has on those people with hypertension.
