Inflammation of the mouth is known as stomatitis. This can be caused by poor oral hygiene, burns due to hot fluids or food intake, medication, allergic reactions or infections. Although the cause of recurrent mouthwatering stomatitis (canker sores) is unknown, it is believed that nutritional deficiencies play an important role. Management of stomatitis depends on the cause responsible for the disease.
Stomatitis is known as “Muhpak” in Ayurveda. Standard Ayurvedic treatment of stomatitis is as follows. Tripala decoction (Three fruits), Pata (Cissampelos pareira), Manuka (dried grapes) and Jai leaves (Jasminum auriculatum) are used in combination with honey to rinse the mouth. Cold water mixed with honey, or a decoction of Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) and alum, is also used as a mouthwash. Yatiadi or Kamdudha oil mixed with cream is used for topical use on wounds. Hadiradi Vati is used for sucking. Soft cleaning is recommended. It is recommended to donate blood in patients with recurrent stomatitis.
In Ayurveda, stomatitis is divided into five different types, depending on the disturbed dosha that causes the symptoms. Below is a brief description of each type along with a specific treatment.
In the type of stomatitis "Vataja" there is severe pain, crack of the tongue and intolerance to cold food. Panklavan (five salts) and medicated oils are used for topical administration. Herbal remedies are useful here: Arjun (Termination of Arjun), Erand (Richin commis), Hadir (Acacia catechu), Guggulu (Kommifor mukul), Jatamansi (Nardostasis Jatamansi), Tagar (Valerian Valiiia), Deodar (Sedrus), deodar (Sedrus), deodar (Sedrusus datarate jatamansi), Tagar (Sedrus (Valerian Valiiia), Deodar (Sedrusis jatamansi), Tagar (Sardrus mujkul)), Deodar (Sedrusis jatamansi), Tagar (Sedrus (Valerian Valiiia), Deodar (Sardrusis jatamansi), Tagar (Valerian Valiiia), Deodar (Sedrusis jatamansi), Tagar (Valerian Valiiia), Deodar (Sedrusis jatamansi), Tagar (Sedrus mutil) ).
In the type of "Pittaja" in the mouth there is a strong burning sensation, redness and bitter taste. In this type, induced cleaning is recommended. Sugar juice, milk, grape juice and glucose water are used as mouthwash. Dhatki (Woodfordia fruticosa) leaves are recommended to chew. The same treatment, along with blood donation, is recommended in the “Raktaja” type, where all the symptoms are more pronounced.
In the “Kafadzha” type, relatively less pain is observed. Mouth ulcers are not very red and sticky. There is more salivation and slight itching in the affected parts. Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), salts and kshars (medicinal caustics) are used for local use. Broths Palash (Butea monosperma) and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), mixed with Kshar, are used as mouthwash.
In the latter type of stomatitis called “Sunnypataja” there is a combination of the symptoms of Vataja, pitta and kafadzha. Treatment is prescribed in accordance with the prevailing symptoms. Ayurvedic composition containing Gorochans, Kasis, Alum, Rasanjan, Mocharas (Salmalia malabarica) and honey is used for topical use.
With the above treatment, most patients who have only local symptoms will heal within a few days. For ulcers, ulcers that are recurrent, or any stomatitis with very serious symptoms, a longer treatment is usually required. In addition, patients may require oral herbal medicine treatment to correct imbalances in the body.
