Concussions are a form of traumatic injury to the head, taken by temporary impairment of brain function. This type of injury is often referred to as a minor injury of a head injury (mTBI) or a minor head injury (MHI) and is one of the most common types of external damage in the head and neck.

In 2013, there were about 2.8 million injured injuries associated with a brain injury in the United States of America. Modern research shows that the most common mechanisms of TBI are:

  • Traffic accidents
  • Falls
  • Strike a specific object or against it
Roughly speaking, all discussions can be divided into two main groups: sports and non-sports. Although treatment in both cases is about universal, patients who receive sports related to concussion are often concerned about how quickly they can return to their workouts, games, and tournaments. The main part of the functional treatment of TBI is to explain the importance of complete recovery before returning to physical activity: this is crucial not only for the patient’s health, but also for his or her optimal physical performance.

What happens during a concussion?

Regardless of the specific mechanism of damage, conversation occurs when a sudden and extreme change in speed occurs. For example, when the goalkeeper hit the ball in the head, he gets a huge local acceleration - and the skull, being a solid structure, first reacts accordingly, moving in the direction of impact.

On the other hand, the brain is a "floating" structure suspended in cerebrovascular fluid in the skull, so it takes more time to change the direction and speed of movement. Thus, when a sudden blow to the head is taken, the brain breaks on the skull, causing damage to local soft tissues.

Similarly, when a person drives a vehicle, such as a car or bicycle, a sudden stop (for example, due to a traffic accident) will lead to a sharp decrease in the speed that initially affects the skull: in the following moments the brain will still be moving in the initial direction hitting the skull.

The resulting symptoms of such damage may include:

  • Physical: headache (both local and diffuse), nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and sound, dizziness, the appearance of flashes of light or blinking stars, blurred vision, tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
  • Emotional and behavioral: depression, anxiety, drowsiness or insomnia, fatigue, irritability.
  • Cognitive: impaired memory and concentration, feeling "slow" or "in the fog."

But this is only half the problem. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, people suffering from concussion have significantly increased the risk of death from other medical problems, such as:

  • Attacks - 50-fold increase in risk.
  • Accidental drug poisoning - 11-fold increase in risk.
  • Infections - 9-fold increase in risk.
  • Pneumonia - 6-fold increase in risk.
This is why a holistic approach to tremors is crucial to the long-term health of each patient, since it must not only alleviate the initial symptoms, but also prevent the development of health problems associated with it.

The usual approach to treating tremors

With regard to treating concussions, most doctors focus on the principle of “preventing additional brain damage”. This is done mainly by prescribing drugs such as painkillers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (to prevent brain waving), antibiotics (to prevent infections during the recovery period), antidepressants, and rarely diuretics (to remove excess fluid from the body). Although this approach is viable and brings many benefits, it almost completely misses non-brain damage from concussion and also postpones long-term health problems.

Of course, this is better than nothing, but it can hardly be considered as a through therapy. Although this treatment is excellent for relieving immediate manifestations, it does not reduce the long-term effects of injury. In other words, a patient who chooses the usual treatment for his concussion may take years of medical care after an injury, often unaware that the damage could have been avoided long ago. Fortunately, various aspects of functional treatment have been proven to be successful in treating the long-term results of traumatic traumatic brain injury.

Functional medicine for treating concussions

The human brain attaches to the spinal cord, so the sudden movement of the former inevitably affects the latter. Even if brainstorming is drastically shifted to one million millimeters, all sorts of health problems can occur as a result of the dislocation of vertebrae and nerves.

That is why spinal manipulation (SMT), as a form of chiropractic treatment, is so effective in treating traumatic events of the cervical spine, which are often accompanied by tremors. Combined with a long-term result, it also reduces pain, increases range of motion, and reduces local muscle spasm.
