A recent study by the University of Washington showed that many of the household products that we use today, including air fresheners and everything that contains fragrances, contain hazardous chemicals and toxins.
Why none of the consumers know about this? Because, in accordance with federal law, manufacturers of cleaning products are not required to report all chemicals that they use to manufacture their products.
These chemicals are called volatile organic compounds or VOCs. They are used on almost all cleaning products on the market today. It was found that one VOC, 1.4 dichlorobenzene reduces lung function by almost 4% when used in cleaning products in the National Health and Nutrition Survey of the US National Institute for Environmental Sciences.
Another study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that using nebulizers can increase the risk of developing asthma by 50%.
What can we do to control these hazards? Most of them recommend getting rid of chemical cleaning products and switching to green alternatives that can be found in most large retail stores. Using natural cleaning products is best for your home, your family and the environment. Also try to avoid spotted detergents and cleaning products.
You can even use ordinary household items to care for your home, including vinegar, baking soda and lemons.
If you prefer to use toxic household cleaners, experts recommend cleaning the mask and proper ventilation.
