The Symbol LS2208 scanner is a very popular, lightweight, ergonomic barcode scanner used in conjunction with many Point of Sale (POS) software products. However, before using the scanner with POS software, there may be some very simple programming steps that need to be taken to prepare the scanner for use.
One of the first steps for Symbol Scanner programming is programming the type of interface that you will use with the scanner. If you are using USB or Keyboard Wedge interfaces, you do not need to worry about programming the scanner, since the scanners are programmed to use these interfaces.
If you are going to use RS-232 or IBM 46XX interfaces, you need to perform a simple step to program the scanner. In the LS2208 Quick Start Guide in the STEP 3 section, you will need to scan the appropriate barcode for OPOS / JPOS or a standard RS-232 interface. Simply pointing the scanner to the appropriate barcode and scanning it will program the scanner to use this interface. The quick start guide also contains bar codes that you can scan for the PORT 5B or PORT 9B interfaces - IBM 46XX or to return to USB mode or Keyboard Wedge.
After you have programmed the interface, the next thing you need to program is the enter key, the carriage return / line function. This feature allows the scanner to add a carriage return / line character, which will be sent to the computer at the end of each bar code that is scanned. This eliminates the need for your leaders to press the enter button after scanning a bar code in their POS system.
To program the key entry, the carriage return / line functionality in the scanner, all you need to do is simply scan the three bar codes listed in the quick start guide. It is also possible to add a tab key to the end of a bar code scan in the manual, and it also performs in the same way as programming an input key.
