If you are looking for the position of a forensic pathologist, you are interested, but the years of medical school make you look the other way, you may want to consider working as a forensic pathology specialist. In this profession, you work together with a forensic pathologist and help him perform all his official duties. You have the ability to perform parts of the autopsy, take X-rays and collect samples from the terminated for further analysis in the form of traces, fingerprints, toxicology, serology, microbiology and histology. You remove foreign objects, such as bullets, from a discontinued action, photograph the body, remove samples and document the chain of evidence. You may be asked to explain the autopsy procedures and report on the results with the victim’s family members, law enforcement officers, and morgue workers.
To be successful in trading a forensic pathologist, your experience is heavier than your education. Most employers of forensic medicine labs require a minimum high school diploma or GED. Having a college level experience in any of the laboratory sciences can also benefit you. In addition, having one or two years of work experience in a medical laboratory or even better, a forensic pathology laboratory can give you an edge. The idea here is to gain working knowledge of general and medical laboratory procedures, medical equipment and instruments, as well as insight in laboratory tests and infection control procedures.
