If you have a low GPA or low MCAT, can you go to medical school? May be.
As most people say, getting into medical school is difficult. You are going to be competitive with some of the brightest people in the United States for your letter of acceptance. These people have a high GPA, a high MCAT, and high-quality extracurricular activities in the medical field. The cost of admission to the class of 2014 in my school is just over 3%. This is a very low percentage, and every year it becomes less and less. It is not surprising that the students before the treatment kill themselves, trying to enter.
The average school student in the USA has a GPA of 3.5 and an MCAT of 30. Negative GPA is 3.0 and of MCAT 25. If the GPA or MCAT is lower than the cut-off number, you most likely will not be invited to an interview. Therefore, a low GPA is defined as something less than 3.0. A low MCAT is defined as anything below 25.
However, you are only human. Maybe you messed up and got a low GPA or a low MCAT. If so, you have very little chance of getting into a US medical school, but you may be accepted into a Caribbean medical school. If you are interested in studying medicine abroad, do not hesitate to contact us, because you have a good chance that you will enter. But if you want to study medicine in the USA (which I recommend studying in foreign medical schools), read on.
Just because you currently have a low GPA or a low MCAT does not mean that you should give up your dream of studying at an American medical school. You can change your current situation. If you are still a student of academic studies, if you are in your first year or second year, you still have time to raise your GPA. Stop parties and avoid other non-academic sabotage. Improving your GPA is your number one goal. If you have already completed your studies, you may want to study after bachelor’s degree. If you can succeed in the post-bac program, you will prove that a low level of GPA is the past and that you are academically capable of medical school.
Another option for those who go to osteopathic medical schools is to repeat the classes you did poorly. The last class will cancel the early class. If your previous score was C, and now you have A, then A is used in determining your GPA. But if your new class is D, D. is used.
If your MCAT is low, you can always get the MCAT again. Just keep in mind that schools can see all your MCAT scores. Therefore, if you do better, they will see it. If you lose, they will see it too.
With a low GPA or low MCAT, you will be at a disadvantage compared to the average. You will have to spend more money and more time to become competitive. You must ask your motive to become a doctor. You must weigh the financial benefits and costs. The price of drugs is high. Does it pay the cost? If the answer is yes, then with perseverance, devotion and money, if medicine is the only way for you, you can be a doctor.
