In a statement, the CSPI notes that several government agencies have called on Americans to reduce their salt intake and even the FDA itself.

The current CSPI petition to the FDA was also sent to Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt, with accompanying support from organizations including the American Nursing Association, the American Public Health Association, the American College of Preventive Medicine and the International Society for Hypertension in Blacks. Prominent physicians and signatories include Dr. Carlos Camargo from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Steve Havas from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Jeremiah Stamler from the Feinberg University School of Medicine, Dr. Myron H. Weinberger from Indiana University Medical School and Dr. Jackson T. Wright of Cleveland University Hospital.

2006 In June 2006, the American Medical Association (AMA), our doctors, added their voice to the war against salt. They are now calling on the FDA to abolish “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) salts and develop regulatory measures to limit sodium in processed and restaurant products.

“To be honest, the FDA is more interested in the racetrack of a new drug therapy for high blood pressure on the market than improves the diet of Americans, so they do not need drugs,” said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson. “Improving food supply by gradually reducing the sodium content in processed foods would have caused many Americans to rush to expensive medical care.

Whole Salts
