If you are interested in finding a job as an administrator assistant, you should know that it may be difficult for you to get started. There are several ways you can promote yourself so that the right people “discover” you. Below are some guidelines that will help you get the job of the administrative assistant you want.
You should definitely think about working through a temporary agency, just to get a foot in the door. You may feel discouraged at the thought of temporary work, not full, but if you already knock on the agency when you open a position, you will already be there and they already know your work ethic.
Use the Internet to find jobs for administrators available in your area. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of sites where you can find the perfect place for you. Many websites even offer tips on resume writing and job interview.
Increase your skills in using computer programs such as MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. In addition, work on general office skills, including simple things, such as serving, appropriately responding to telephones and organizing information. Most jobs with administrative assistants will have the skills listed on the job list.
After you have found several tasks that interest you and for which you are entitled, you should prepare materials that you will send to the company. Many people use letters of the basic form and the same resume for each job for which they apply. This is not true. Computer programs make it easier for you to customize these materials so that they can be individually targeted to one specific agency. However, if you decide to do this, you must send each company to which you apply to your resume and links with a covering letter. Take the time to use links that are relevant to the task you are looking at.
If you have done all this, but still not lucky, you may need to develop a long-term plan to improve your employment. Take on additional responsibilities at school or the work you currently have. If you are not at school, think about going back to school to help you get the skills you need.
