Some medicines can promote breast growth or human boobs. They interact with the natural levels of the hormones testosterone and estrogen and in some way disturb the balance. Gynecomastia is a common consequence of the treatment of estrogen in patients with the prostate gland. Drugs that can cause gynecomastia include:
- Hormones (androgens, anabolic steroids, estrogen agonists)
- Antiandrogens or inhibitors of androgen synthesis
- Antibiotics (isoniazid, ketoconazole)
- Anti-ulcer agents such as cimetidine
- Cancer chemotherapy, especially alkylating agents
- Cardiovascular drugs such as captopril and digitoxin
- Psychoactive agents such as diazepam and tricyclic antidepressants
- Recreational drugs such as alcohol and marijuana
- penicillamine
Alcohol and drugs can cause gynecomastia, mimicking estrogen and stimulating the production of androgens. Steroids and other excess androgens are sometimes converted by the body into estrogens and, therefore, cause problems with male breasts.
To reverse breast growth, medication may be altered.
Men over 50 years of age tend to produce less androgens, such as testosterone or adipose tissue, which convert androgen into estrogen. In 3 percent of reported cases, gynecomastia can signal lung, liver or adrenal cancer. Tumors can secrete estrogen, disrupting hormonal balance. There were also studies that showed marijuana promotes tissue growth in the area of nipple aerosols. Many testosterone boosting drugs sold to young body builders or young people involved in youth athletics cause gynecomastia. Androsten or androstenoid is a great example. It exploded on the market in the mid-90s after Mark McQuire had problems using it. Many young athletes, including me, have used this product.
